WHAT HAPPENS
AT OUR DRUM CIRCLE |
The River Circle Drum Circle meets from 1 to 3 p.m. on the last Sunday of each month at Singingbird Nature Center in Black Hawk State Historic Site in Rock Island, IL.
We use drums and rattles to create a community circle that celebrates our connectedness to life and all of creation. Our circle respects the traditions of all indigenous peoples, and it does not draw upon one certain culture, but many. Before we start our meeting, we smudge each other outdoors with the smoke from burning sage to cleanse our energy fields. Next we bless our drums or rattles with tobacco, which is a traditional gift of gratitude. All this is preparation for forming our sacred circle. We sit in chairs in a circle and invite the spirits of the four directions and of the earth and sky to join and guide us. This creates a sacred space to help us with our intentions, drumming and prayers. In the middle of our circle is a simple cloth altar with items symbolizing the four elements of earth, fire, water and air. People also may bring personal items for the altar. Each drumming is led by a volunteer from the group, and it may have a special request or intention. By drumming together with a steady beat, we increase the power of our circle and our intentions. A drumming may last from 5 to 10 minutes. Members have an opportunity to share their thoughts afterward. After several drummings, we conclude with a formal closing of the sacred circle and give thanks to the Creator. A love donation is appreciated to pay for the space. We are a diverse group of individuals. People of all ages, cultures, and religious beliefs join together each month for a rewarding experience rooted in friendship, mutual respect and the power of Spirit in all of us. Newcomers are most welcome. We have extra drums and rattles for you to use, and it's easy to follow along. For more information, contact our facilitator Julie. |
